Professional Services Industries, Inc. (PSI)

One company, one call

The service offering at PSI is a diverse and wide-ranging one

PSI (Professional Services Industries, Inc.) is a national firm with a strong local presence that adds value to its clients' projects by providing information that aids their clients in meeting quality requirements and helps them manage potential liability. PSI is a leader in engineering and environmental services, it is recognized in several disciplines, including geotechnical engineering, construction materials testing and engineering, roof and pavement consulting, asbestos management, environmental consulting, industrial hygiene, and facilities engineering and consulting.

Founded in Illinois in 1961 to provide engineering, testing and inspection services to the construction industry, PSI has grown to become the largest consulting and testing firm in the U.S. According to PSI President Murray Savage, "We choose to lead and we are committed to our vision and clients. PSI has a culture of continuous improvement and Quality of Service (QoS)."

With a combined experience dating back to over 100 years, PSI employs more than 2,700 skilled personnel in 125 offices, six of them in Ohio: Cleveland, Canton, Youngstown, Lima, Columbus, and Dayton, with a total Ohio staff of 180. Cleveland is the largest, with Columbus running a close second.

PSI branch offices operate as local firms, combining the responsiveness and services of a local company with the management skills and resources of a national firm. This means PSI offers highly developed local expertise on wide range of services, with the familiarity and relationship of the regional business and regulatory communities, a responsiveness that is possible only when you are located near your clients. "Each local manager has not only the full responsibility for getting the job done, but also the authority and the resources to ensure the work is completed on-time, correctly, and economically," says Dr. Vijay K. Khosla, P.E., and executive vice president for Ohio, Michigan, West Virginia and Western New York..

A full range of services

In In addition to continuous improvement, says Dr. Khosla,PSI's strength lies in the Quality of Service, interdisciplinary staff, technical expertise, financial strength, and resources. This allows PSI to provide a full range of services from a single source, which the company calls "One Company, One Call." Through integrating all of its disciplines into a single, client-oriented team, PSI can handle the most challenging and complex projects.

An interdisciplinary team

PSI's broad range of clients is possible because PSI's manages its projects with an interdisciplinary team approach, involving geotechnical, construction, and environmental professionals. Dave Sabol, PE, PSI's vice president of Northeast Ohio and Western New York operations, says, "Qualified people are PSI's strength. Our staff has extensive experience and education in all the needed disciplines."

According to Jerry Hutchison, PSI's business development manager for Northeastern Ohio and Western New York, "We ensure that our personnel are well trained and have the resources to meet our client's needs. It is our responsibility." That, he says, creates longevity. "We don't have customer's, we have clientsrelationships for life. And we have a commitment to our clients. We know their needs and how to meet them. Our client relationships are like sliding on an old shoewe have that kind of comfort level."

PSI makes this promise to its clients: "We promise to listen to you, to develop an understanding of your business goals and project objectives. We will work together as a team to accomplish this on time. If you believe we've not done our best to listen, understand or meet your expectations, then tell us. And if we don't respond, we don't deserve your business."

And if we don't respond, we don't deserve your business." bxm

  • Akron-Summit Co. Library: The $57 million project with management by the Ruhlin Co. had concrete caisson foundation and 8 miles of book shelving. PSI's responsibilities include complete project construction and special inspection.
  • ALCOA Cleveland Forge Plant: PSI provides on-going environmental and asbestos management services and is on-call 24/7 to support and coordinate emergency activities.
  • Case Western Reserve University's North Residential Village: PSI provides on-going environmental and asbestos management services and is on-call 24/7 to support and coordinate emergency activities.

  • Cleveland Clinic Foundation: PSI designed and implemented a facility wide asbestos assessment and compliance survey of the 8 million-SF downtown campus and provided Auto-CAD drawings for all buildings.
  • Euclid Corridor Transportation Project: This $168 million, 7-mile project will totally redo Euclid from Public Square to Windermere. As part of a team headed by Wilbur Smith & Associates, PSI handled geotechnical engineering on a fast-track schedule, completing 100 borings along the corridor. PSI was selected by GCRTA to provide environment assessment and consulting services for properties along the corridor.
  • Fremont Energy Center: This 540-megawatt natural gas-fired electricity generating facility is a $340 million investment by Calpine Corp., with two advanced combustion turbines in combined cycle with a single steam turbine, an environmentally responsible source of power. PSI provided geotechnical engineering and construction materials testing services.
  • House of Blues: The creating this new entertainment complex out of two old buildings in downtown Cleveland by D-A-S Construction Co. required the removal of 9,000 sf of existing floor and creation of a mezzanine which involved PSI as the steel and structural quality control and testing inspection firm. A special challenge was basically to build a new building inside the old space with a new foundation and structural steel supports.
  • Innerbelt relocation: PSI provided geotechnical engineering services to Dept. of Transportation District 12 for the Innerbelt Relocation and Dead Man's Curve realignment.
  • John Carroll University's Dolan Center for Science and Technology: The largest construction project in the JCU history costing $66.4 million PSI's provided QC and construction inspection.
  • Lakeview Bluffs: A brownfield site in Painesville is being transformed into a sports-oriented resort community on 1,000 acres along Lake Erie, in a private-public partnership by Hemisphere Development. PSI is the geotechnical engineering consultant and quality control and construction testing firm of record.
  • Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District: The three phases of the Mill Creek Tunnel Project are a $168 million project that relieves sewer capacity problems in nine communities and involves deep tunnel construction, shaft excavations and an almost 3-mile long third phase for storage of nearly 38 million gallons of stormwater.
  • Ohio Savings/Goldberg: PSI worked with Turner Construction Co. on this $20 million mixed-use retail and parking project in downtown Cleveland, which had the structural capacity for a future tower to be built on top. PSI provided on-site construction materials inspection, testing and quality control services.
  • Ohio State University's Football Stadium: This expansion upgraded the 80-year-old Horseshoe and added 10,000 more seats, with Osborn Architects and Engineers as the client. The project also involved lowering the existing playing field and expanding the upper deck. The Columbus PSI office provided onsite construction materials inspection, testing, and quality control. Key was oversight of one of the largest concrete rehab efforts in the US that year.
  • Progressive Insurance Co., Campus II: The firm's new state-of-the-art data center was part of a $24 million expansion done by Whiting Turner. PSI was responsible for testing and inspection, NDE, and quality control.
  • Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum: This major Cleveland landmark by Turner Construction Co. was a challenge because of methane gas trapped under shale, requiring special geotechnical drilling techniques on both water and land, and two different foundation system designs. PSI participated as the geotechnical engineering consultant, drilling and quality control firm.
